Homeless Blogger

Though I don't go for these kinds of stories much I found this blog listed on some web site (drudgereport.com?) and I must say that I have been reading it off and on for the last couple of weeks. The story is that there is this homeless family down in Greensboro, NC and the guy is telling the story of their ordeal through a Blogger site that he accesses at the public library.

I don't think he wants a handout. He makes some comments about why property owners evict and how they sleep at night, but then gets right back to talking about the facts. In college one of my side jobs was flipping rental properties. Flipping is the art of going in after a tenant moves out and doing the painting, hiring a carpet cleaner, repairing any damages that sort of thing. I only had the bad luck of doing one eviction. I hated seeing this family tossed in the street. They left behind clothes, toys, pictures and furniture.

Their lives were reduced to some bags and boxes that they could fit in their cars. The sheriff marched them out the door at noon on the appointed date and then wanted all of their stuff removed and sat on the curb. Instead of tossing their stuff into the street, the owner had a moving company come and haul it off to a storage facility where they later claimed it. They were very grateful that the property owner gave them the opportunity to save family memories. He wasn't some mean ass heartless bastard. He simply had bills to pay himself.

Any who, his name is Michael Brown and he lost his job as a graphic designer and then you can guess the rest. I certainly have empathy for this man and his family. I find myself interested in his situation and thought I would mention it. I am not one that thinks that society needs to bail homeless people out. Rental properties are a business and the business owner has to do what ever it takes to keep his business open. That said, I could never do the rental property thing. I certainly could and would evict someone for non payment. I am not so sure that I would like myself very much for having done it. Oh well. Business is business.
