We use Kodak DP2 software in the lab to manage quite a bit of the work that we do. It drives our Kodak HR500 scanner, accepts incoming work from LabPrints and soon enough ROES and also operates as our digital PVAC for color correction. It is an awful lot of money, but it does an awful lot for us.
It is not for the faint of heart. I liken working within DP2 to scrolling around in an Excel spreadsheet trying to quickly make things happen. I’ll post some screen shots of the software tomorrow. It takes a lot of training to get people up to speed and changes in the software occur at a snails pace. But it really is the best software for large scale management of the professional photo lab.
Kodak has decided to simplify the software to make it more friendly for the small professional labs that don’t have the need for all of the advanced features, consumer labs trying to take their business to the next level in terms of deliverables and also to large volume studios that have their own output device.
Enter Kodak DP1. While I am going to reserve judgment on this software until I can actually see the demo, I think that it is going to fill a very important gap for the smaller lab. For as much as I love ExpressDigital and for all of the work that I put through it we maintain our license of DP2. Given that we use LabPrints as well as ROES soon enough DP2 is a requirement for our lab. For a lab that needs more than Express offers without the ability to tie in workflow software like LabPrints or ROES this is very likely the answer for you.
Bob might not like me talking this up, and my friends at Express might not like me talking this up but if you find yourself in the target market for this software you owe it to yourself and to your business to have a look when this software becomes available.
