Java Apps on a Verizon Treo?

Yep, you bet. It is true that Verizon cripples up their phones with this Brew application layer. I don’t know what it is, but I know that Java apps don’t run on it. How’s that for an explanation? Whatever. You can STILL install Java apps on your Verizon Treo. Here’s how you do it.

  1. Go to the Palm website and download the IBM Java VM. Follow the directions t o t h e l e t t e r! You only need to install the 2 required files.
  2. Download your favorite Java application and enjoy!

The Java VM will take about 3 MB of RAM and then any applications that you have will take more. You can install a lot of the applications on your SD card if you have one. I tend to not pay a lot of attention to space as I don’t have a bunch of applications that I just don’t need installed.

I did this just after I got my Treo because I wanted to use the Opera Mini Browser and couldn’t. I do prefer it to Blazer though it takes some getting used to, and it simply won’t run on Verizon Brew. Runs great on the IBM JVM. Also, just today Google has released a Java application for Gmail. It won’t run on a Verizon Treo. Unless you install the IBM JVM. Then it runs great.

I am a huge fan of Gmail. I have even switched our bbcolorlabs.com domain over to being hosted by Gmail. Since I moved our POP server over I have nearly eliminated our SPAM problems.

I hate that Verizon cripples their phones so much, then again I really don’t care. I won’t use their Vcast music service. Instead of picture messaging I use email if I take a picture on the thing that I need to send. Text messaging? Yeah, I do have it on my personal phone. My kids both have it and they text me all the time. Aside from my Treo data plan they don’t get any extra money from me for all of their “services”.
